For each length it was about 18 (9 per side). After I thought about it from a perceived effort standpoint, if I actively increase my rotation, I might actually end up make less over all rotations due to the increase in speed... perhaps.

There's two ways to improve your swim stroke cadence -
Google "Swim Golf" and try it out. It's both fun and informative.
Go to youtube and google "swim stroke videos" and look for videos of Phelps and others. Lots of them are from underwater and even in slow motion so you can have reference to what is actually fastest.

So, after reading the article about running and cycling cadence, I wondered if there was an optimal stroke count for a length in the water? more clean arm rotations the better?
I'll pay attention today and see what I turn on average per length. Might be interesting.
